Great song lyrics

I know this is probably a cliche topic, but, if nothing else, I want it to remember lyrics I like.

"Have you come here for forgiveness
Have you come to raise the dead
Have you come here to play Jesus
To the lepers in your head "

- U2 "One" (This is a great song in general. I like all the lyrics. This is just my favorite part. How can it not be hard hitting when you ask someone if they are playing Jesus to their own lepers."

"'Cause you can't jump the track, we're like cars on a cable
And life's like an hourglass, glued to the table
No one can find the rewind button, girl.
So cradle your head in your hands
And breathe..."

- Anna Nalick "Breathe"

"Am I a part of the cure
Or am I part of the disease?"
- Cold Play "Clocks"

"And you can't fight the tears that ain't coming,
Or the moment of the truth in your lies.
When everything feels like the movies,
Yeah you bleed just to know you're alive."

- Goo Goo Dolls "Iris" (In a way this song bugs me because they overplayed it when the movie came out, but how can you beat a line like "when everything feels like the movies, yeah you bleed just to know you're alive,"?)

"I'm still alive but I'm barely breathin'
Just prayed to a god that I don't believe in,
Cuz I got time while she got freedom
Cuz when a heart breaks well it don't break even"
- Script "Breakeven" (Love the honesty in the line, "Just prayed to a god that I don't believe in")

"I found god, on the corner of First and Amistad
Where the west was all but won
All alone, smokin' his last cigarette
I said, 'Where've you been?'
He said, 'Ask anything?' "
- Fray "You Found Me"

"Now, Muriel plays piano
Every Friday at the Hollywood
And they brought me down to see her
And they asked me if I would
Do a little number
And I sang with all my might
She said, 'Tell me are you a Christian, child?'
And I said, 'Ma'am, I am tonight!' "

- Marc Cohn, "Walkin in Memphis" (Obviously, I just like songs with sacrilegious lines in the them.)

"And I find it kinda funny
I find it kinda sad
The dreams in which I'm dyin'
Are the best I ever had"
- Tears for Fears, "Mad World"

"So let it rock, let it roll
Let the Bible Belt come and save my soul
Hold on to 16 as long as you can
Changes come around real soon make us women and men."
- John Cougar Mellencamp, "Jack and Diane"

Adventures on the Central Coast

The Boy and I had a fantastic weekend in Monterey, California. There is so much to do there. Fabulous restaurants. Great historic sites. Nice shopping. Here are the highlights:

Breakfast at Grandma's Kitchen, homemade cranberry and pecan pancakes. Yummy.

Campus tour of California State University Monterey Bay. The Boy is considering going there. I'm all for it. It's a beautiful area and I can come visit. Mom-priorities for choosing a college.

My favorite part of the entire trip, dinner at Montrio. The first course was two small plates: lobster mac 'n cheese and crab croquettes, also fresh bread with olive oil and balsamic vinegar. The main course was Florida shrimp on a bed of micro pasta with oven dried tomatoes and arugula for The Boy and slow braised beef rib with garlic mashed potatoes for me. The meal wrapped up with white chocolate bread pudding with passion fruit ice cream.

We finished the evening with a Ghost Tour of Old Monterey. Very cool and creepy. Good ghost stories told by the tour guide. It was cold and blustery though. I guess that kind of adds to the suspense.

The next morning was a visit to the mission in Carmel. Beautiful, old, well-kept mission. Sunday services were going on so we didn't really get to visit the basilica. I guess that was bad timing on my part. Still it was gorgeous.

Next lunch and a movie. Lunch at Lalla Grill. I had a Cuban sandwich, sweet potato fries, and a pomegranet cosmo. Yummy. Then we saw, "The Lady in Black." Pretty good scary movie. It was definitely suspenseful. I liked that. The setting and costuming were gorgeous. It was worth it just for the cinematography. The ending was so-so. I feel tat way a lot about suspense movie endings. It's hard to find a satisfying ending after all the mystery, build-up, and suspense. Still well worth it. If you're not crazy about spending $20 on a movie, then rent it.

The next morning was time to pack up and head home. Ahhhh..... I love three-day weekends.

Computer Games Kill TV

I read an article today about nine things that will disappear in our lifetime. Some were not surprising: newspapers, books, home phone lines. However, the article also declared the death of television. Interesting. Considering there are tons of studies and articles out there about Americans watching too much TV. How is it going to die if it is overconsumed? The argument the article made was television streaming and online gaming were going to kill television.... as we know it, I assume, since streaming television shows is still television. The article also cited sensationalist tv as proof that the industry is self-destructing. Maybe so. I will have to say, it is hard to find a good sitcom these days. Most dramas are a spin-off of already-successful shows.

So, if the article is true, I will have to say I am guilty of contributing to the death of television. I have not paid for cable television my entire adult life. There are a couple of times I have lived with someone who couldn't live without cable so I had it by default. But when the decision was entirely up to me, no cable. I do not understand the sense in paying for something that has so many commercials in it. Aren't the commercials supposed to fund the television? Why do they need my $80.00/month on top of that? I do however subscribe to a couple of streaming products which I can watch a wide variety of shows at my own leisure. Not everything is there but, generally, I have a good selection and for half the price.

As for the second charge, online gaming... I'm guilty there too. I have always loved games: Boggle, Hearts, Monopoly, Clue, Uno, Tripoly, and so on. There problem is I don't really have enough people I know to play with. I have a couple of options, but that's about it. Enter computer games. Yay! Cards, puzzles, logic games, word games, little farming games... a wide array of games I can play without needing to find someone to play with me. Is this antisocial? Yeah, maybe a little. But it is certainly practical. These days I have some favorites: Scramble, Zombie Farm, Gardens of Time, free online jigsaw puzzles, Logic Puzzles, memory cards, word searches, Sudoku.... Do I sound like an addict? Yeah, maybe a little.

Triple Double Stuff

I discovered Triple Double Stuff Oreos today. Yum! Double Stuff Oreos with white and chocolate frosting inside. Double Stuff Oreos are a sinful treat to begin with. But you add a second layer of chocolate frosting on top of that, Manna from Heaven!

Finding the time

What a crazy busy month January was! Sometimes it's hard to find the time to relax and enjoy and de-stress, which I believe is critically important to have a good life and good health. I honestly don't know how people in other career fields do it. In education, we have reliable holidays, built in vacation times, and fairly routine work hours. How do retail or the medical field do it when they have ever changing shifts and no days off?

Life is meant to be lived. In my mind, this means there needs to be a purpose or contribution to humanity or the earth, AND there needs to be joy and appreciation of the life we have. Now for me, I enjoy my job. It's my contribution to humanity, and children and a community who need me. And it is a source of joy. I enjoy my colleagues. I enjoy my little school and overseeing the learning and activities which goes on there. But still, all work and no play make this bird dull and drab. Finding the time to have a hobby, get out in the fresh air, and have a social life beyond work colleagues is tricky. There just aren't enough hours in a weekend to keep up my house and yard, re-cooperate and catch up on lost sleep, and have a social life.

So, my weekends are split between one day vegetating and doing little chores, and one day trying to have a little fun. Today was cooking lunch and watching a video with a friend. Ooo, I live on the edge.
